Lancaster City Council Votes to Rename City Park in Honor of Sergeant Steve Owen

Post Date:10/26/2016
During last night’s City Council meeting, the Lancaster City Council voted to rename Lancaster City Park as “Sgt. Steve Owen Memorial Park.”

“Sergeant Steve Owen was not only an exemplary law enforcement officer, but a great man,” said Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris. “The positive impact which Sergeant Owen made – on our young people, his fellow officers, and our valley as a whole – was immense.”

Sergeant Steve Owen, a 29-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, was murdered in the line of duty while responding to a burglary call in Lancaster on October 5, 2016. Well-known and loved throughout the community, Owen was also a local hero. His bravery was recognized in 2014 when he was awarded the Meritorious Conduct Medal after saving a hostage held at gunpoint.

Sergeant Steve Owen was a prominent figure within the Antelope Valley not only due to his role with the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station, but also his active engagement within the community. A loving son, dedicated father, and devoted husband, Sgt. Owen was a volunteer football coach at Paraclete High School and also mentored local youth through the Sheriff’s Explorer Program.

“Steve was a true hero, a man of faith and character, a role model, and a leader,” added Mayor Parris. “The scriptures say that there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for a friend. It was evident that Sgt. Owen loved this community…and when he gave his life while protecting our residents, he made the ultimate sacrifice which we can never repay. In this small gesture, we honor his heroism and remember his love for this community – while memorializing our community’s love and gratitude for him.”
