City of Lancaster Expands Cooling Center Access During Extreme Heat Events

Post Date:07/08/2024 3:21 PM

Lancaster, CA. July 8, 2024 – As temperatures rise across Southern California, the City of Lancaster is committed to providing residents with safe and accessible ways to stay cool. The City utilizes Los Angeles County Cooling Centers, which are available during regular business hours. A complete list of locations within Lancaster city limits can be found on the City’s website:www.cityoflancasterca.gov/coolingcenters. “The well-being of our residents is our utmost concern, especially during severe heatwaves,” said Mayor of Lancaster, R. Rex Parris. “We are dedicated to establishing accessible cooling centers and resources, ensuring everyone in Lancaster has a secure haven from the heat."

Extreme Heat Events (EHE) are periods of significantly hotter and more humid weather than usual for a specific location and time of year. The City of Lancaster has developed specific criteria to identify and forecast EHE conditions, utilizing historical meteorological data. When the National Weather Service issues a heat warning and specific criteria are met (such as temperatures exceeding 102° for two consecutive days with nighttime temperatures not dropping below 75°), the City activates its Augmented Cooling Center program. This program ensures that cooling centers are available to residents even when LA County Cooling Centers are closed due to federal holidays, construction, or other reasons. By opening our own centers during these times, we ensure that those who need it most are kept cool during heatwaves.

The location and hours of operation for augmented cooling centers will be determined based on the availability of other cooling centers in the area to guarantee comprehensive coverage. This is coordinated through LA County in partnership with Disaster Management Operating Area B.Residents are encouraged to visit cooling centers and bring their favorite non-alcoholic beverages, snacks, reading materials, games, etc. In addition to cooling centers, residents can also take advantage of the following:

  • Public Swim at Pierre Bain/Eastside Park:
  • Monday and Wednesday: 1:45 to 4:30 p.m.
  • Saturday: 1:45 to 5:30 p.m.
  • Splash Pad at Tierra Bonita Park:
  • May 24 to October 1
  • Monday through Sunday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The City of Lancaster prioritizes the well-being of its residents and is dedicated to providing resources to help them stay safe and healthy during extreme heat events.
