Lancaster, CA. August 1, 2024 – Due to the anticipated rise in temperatures the region will be experiencing through the weekend, the City of Lancaster has determined the need for an augmented cooling center to be open to the public at the Lancaster Museum of Art and History this Sunday, August 4. "As we anticipate high temperatures this weekend, the safety and well-being of our community remain our top priority. The cooling centers across the City are equipped to provide a cool and comfortable environment for all residents so that everyone has a safe place to escape the heat,” said Mayor R. Rex Parris. “I encourage citizens to take advantage of these resources and to check on those who may be vulnerable during these weather conditions."
The need for an augmented cooling center is determined when the National Weather Service issues a heat warning and specific criteria are met, including temperatures exceeding 102 degrees for two consecutive days and nighttime temperatures remaining above 75 degrees. Lancaster will experience the first noticeable increase in high temperatures over the next few days as high pressure expands across the western states, likely continuing through the next week.
The City of Lancaster wishes to provide a safe and accessible cooling center for residents during extreme heat events (EHE) when Los Angeles County Cooling Centers are closed, ensuring continuous relief from high temperatures.
