CITY OF LANCASTER PUTS FORTH ORDINANCE REQUIRING FACE COVERINGS IN PUBLIC DURING THE COVID-19 EMERGENCY
Post Date:04/02/2020 8:26 PM
Dear Lancaster Community Members,
I am now directing all Lancaster community members to wear a face covering while in public. The ordinance requiring face covers will go before the City Council tomorrow evening during a special telephonic meeting. Upon adoption, Lancaster will be the first city via ordinance to require individuals to wear a proper face covering, which shields their mouth and nose, while in public places.
I want to be clear that the City is not requiring a specific type of mask and we certainly do not want to take away from medical professionals who will need medical grade masks. We are simply requiring that your nose and mouth be covered; whether it’s with a homemade mask, a bandana, or a piece of fabric that acts as a physical barrier between your mouth and nose and the immediate environment around you. We do not expect you to wear face covering if you are doing an outdoor activity, like running, where you are not in contact with other people.
As we continue to learn more about the virus, we understand that no one is safe. We initially thought healthy kids and young adults were not at risk of dying from COVID-19, but that has proven to be untrue. We must do everything we can to prevent this virus from spreading. Continue to practice social distancing. Wash your hands. Do not touch your face. Please stay home. If you must leave your house, cover your mouth and nose. It protects you and those around you. There are going to be tough times ahead, but we will get through this together. The sooner we can slow the spread, the sooner all of our lives can get back to normal.
